A Proud History: The First Twenty-Five Years (1969–1994)

Founded on 30th September 1969, The Manor Royal Lodge No. 8296 began its journey through the vision and dedication of a group of passionate Brethren—our Founders. Their mission was clear: to establish a Lodge on solid ground, built to endure, and to foster Brotherhood and excellence within the Craft.

From its earliest days, the Lodge embodied resilience and unity. This spirit was exemplified when W. Bro. Hugh Hawkins stepped in as the first Master with only 48 hours’ notice, following the unexpected withdrawal of the original nominee. Supported by W. Bro. John Stanford and W. Bro. Ted O’Brien, who also stepped into key roles, the Founders provided leadership, encouragement, and inspiration, laying the foundation for the Lodge’s success.

Over the first 25 years, 58 Brethren were initiated, and countless others joined, drawn by the Lodge’s reputation for high standards, hard work, and Masonic harmony. Symbolized by the Sussex Oak, our Lodge has grown from a carefully planted acorn into a strong and enduring tree, reflecting its stability, strength, and lasting legacy.

The Manor Royal Lodge has not only shaped the lives of its members but also influenced Freemasonry beyond its walls. Many Brethren who began their Masonic journeys here have gone on to hold prestigious offices in other Lodges, both locally and internationally. Like the branches of an oak spreading far and wide, our influence continues to grow.

As we reflect on our proud past, we remain committed to our future. The Founders and Past Masters stand ready to guide and support the next generation, ensuring the Lodge’s traditions and values endure.

Rooted in the rich and fertile soil of Sussex Masonry, The Manor Royal Lodge continues to thrive—a living testament to the vision, dedication, and unity of its Founders.
